Miami @ Virginia Tech Virginia Tech lost the turnover battle 3-0 in their 30-6 loss at home to Miami. The bigger issue for the Hokies was that 149 of the team’s 262 yards came in garbage time when the outcome was already long since decided. USF @ Cincinnati Cincinnati defeated USF 34-17 but they should have won by a wider margin had they turned a decided edge in yards (590-281) into points. Talented Bearcat starting QB Gunner Kiel left the game at halftime and back-up Munchie Legeaux promptly went 14-15 in relief. Mike Boone ran the ball 19 times for 212 yards, giving UC punch from the backfield they’d desperately lacked. BYU @ Boise St Boise St used a 41 point explosion in the 1st half to dispatch BYU on the smurf turf. Boise outgained BYU 637-322 earning a 13 minute edge in time of possession in the process. Balance was key for the Broncos as they gained 410 through the air and 227 on the ground. Oregon @ California Oregon went down to Levi Stadium and came away with a 59-41 win against Cal. The final boxscore showed a pretty balanced game with Cal +3 in the first down department and only -30 in total yards despite losing by 3 scores. UAB @ Arkansas Arkansas only won 45-17 but the final score wasn’t nearly as indicative of their first half domination when the Pigs built a 35-0 lead. UAB only had 2 drives cover more than 50 yards and one of their TD’s came courtesy of a 100 yard kickoff return while the other was in garbage time with just 42 seconds remaining. Memphis @ SMU (Insert team) flattened SMU 48-10. This week it was Memphis but to preserve the sanity of the...

Boxscores rarely lie…finals do. Here’s what you may have missed from the weekend that was Temple @ Houston Houston used a steady ground game en route to a 31-10 win over Temple. The cougars ran the football 49 times creating a decisive 42:17 to 17:27 time of possession edge. Total plays in the game? 82-49 Cougars benefiting from a +4 turnover differential. USF @ Tulsa USF may have turned their season around against Tulsa. Facing a 27-7 halftime deficit, the Bulls flipped the script in the 2nd half outscoring the Golden Hurricane 31-3. What made the comeback more impressive is they did it without the help of turnovers, covering 52 yards or more on each TD drive. Syracuse @ Wake Forest Syracuse scored 1 offensive touchdown in their 30-7 win over Wake Forest. The Orange used a Pick 6 and a fumble return to create an inflated margin of victory. They outgained Wake 370-170 total offensive output. Baylor @ West Virginia WVU finished their game against Baylor -3 in turnovers but dominated every other category on the stat sheet. The Mountaineers outgained Baylor 456-318, outrushed them 134-95, and had 77 fewer penalty yards. Art Briles team actually racked up 18 penalties resulting in 215 yards…not good. Kansas St @ Oklahoma Oklahoma outgained Kansas St 533-385 but were done in by 2 costly turnovers and special teams gaffes in getting upset by the Wildcats. Trevor Knight was efficient passing the football going 26-32 however his biggest mistake was a poorly thrown out pattern that resulted in a Pick 6. Iowa @ Maryland Maryland’s win over Iowa was a game filled with major scoring runs. The Hawkeyes started the game scoring the first 14 points before Maryland went on a 38-7 spree before Iowa closed the...

Last weekend offered yet another jolt to the system for the college football playoff. The BigXII’s leading candidates both went down in a blaze of glory and their stumbles actually became TCU’s benefit in the big picture. Also for the first time this year Florida St is no longer listed as the favorite instead both Ole Miss and Alabama share that distinction at 5-1. The Seminoles still have the easiest scheduled and inside track into the playoff but their play on the field hasn’t been consistent with a national championship frontrunner. Georgia, despite some early season struggles, has a home schedule consistent with win and get in…if they can get through Auburn in mid-November. Either way anything can and will happen the next 6 weeks but in the eyes of oddsmakers the SEC is still king while everyone else just tries to get a seat at the table. The deeper you get into the season the more valuable statistical analysis becomes. Gone are the outliers against Directional State U and the 42 bye weeks creating schedule imbalance (unless of course you’re the BigXII). Final scores only share a Cliffs Notes version of what transpired on the field and can lead to poor choices moving forward. Here’s what you may have missed hidden in the box scores from Week 7’s college football slate. Oklahoma vs Texas Oklahoma may have beaten Texas in their annual rivalry game but it wasn’t because of anything their offense did. The Sooners picked up 11 first downs and were 1-11 on 3rd down. Trevor Knight struggled for the 2nd straight week, this time going 12-20 but only for 129 yards. Texas outrushed, outpassed, and outplayed OU but like so many games this season the Horns were unable to turn those results into a victory. Michigan St @ Purdue Michigan St had just shy of a 200 yard advantage against Purdue on Saturday. However they needed a late TD for insurance against a pesky Boilermaker side. Northwestern @ Minnesota Northwestern couldn’t pick up their 3rd upset in as many weeks despite doubling up the Gophers in first downs and accumulating a +119 yard offensive advantage. The Wildcats also ran 30 more plays on offense than their opponent. The 100 yard Minnesota kickoff return is what eventually made the difference in the final score. Tulsa @ Temple Tulsa and Temple combined to go 7-30 on 3rd down. The problem for under bettors is they were doomed by a 99 yard TD drive at the end of the first half that not only cooked 1st half under tickets but also full game with the final score just sneaking over by the...

Well damn, last weekend’s version of college football Armageddon was all sorts of awesome. Upheaval across the landscape made for some fantastic viewing, something we can only hope continues this weekend with a few high profile showdowns. Kudos to the oddsmakers, tight numbers all across the board on the big games but that didn’t stop the gang from offering opinions on each clash of the titans. Grab an adult beverage, your significant other, and small children before finding a nice spot around the fireplace to listen to the sweet sounds of Adam Kramer, Bud Elliott, Drew Collins, and myself get you to the window this weekend. You also might want to pack a snack, you’ll be here a while. Games covered in detail: Texas/Oklahoma, Indiana/Iowa, TCU/Baylor, Auburn/Mississippi St, Alabama/Arkansas, LSU/Florida, Oregon/UCLA, USC/Arizona, UGA/Missouri, Louisville/Clemson, UNC/Notre Dame, Ole Miss/Texas A&M, PSU/Michingan. After a 2 week hiatus #BoxsoreReview is back with a vengeance. For those unfamiliar with the exercise these are the handful of nuggets that you may have missed from a busy weekend of college football. Remember final scores don’t always tell the full story for what went down meaning a misleading Box Score creates value on teams moving forward. Arizona @ Oregon There was nothing fluke like about Arizona’s upset of Oregon as 21 pt dogs. Arizona stayed committed to the run, averaging less than 4 YPC but running the rock 55 times to soften the interior of the Ducks o-line. The largest deficit Arizona faced all night was 4 points at 2 different junctures. UCF @ Houston UCF only gained 228 yards picking up just 10 first downs en route to upsetting Houston as 3 pt underdogs. As has so often been the case for the Cougars this year they lost the turnover battle 3-1. Starting QB John O’Korn was removed in favor of backup Greg Ward for a large portion of the 2nd half. FAU @ FIU By the looks of a 38-10 final score you’d think 6.5 pt underdog FIU put a whooping on their in-state rivals. However they were out first downed and out gained by Florida Atlantic. They took full advantage of 4 Owls turnovers, using a 24-0 2nd half to win comfortably. San Diego St @ Fresno St San Diego St missed the services of starting QB Quinn Kaehler vs Fresno St. Nick Bawden (2* recruit) made his first start going 9-24 in the passing department but did gain some confidence late before 2 critical interceptions doomed Aztec comeback efforts. Utah St @ BYU BYU’s slim hopes of making the inaugural CFB playoff were dashed by Utah St....

We got the band back together!!! Adam Kramer made his triumphant return to the podcast this week after a brief 1 week hiatus. We’ll all be the first to admit that last week’s edition got a little weird…and no it wasn’t because I finally figured out how to pick a damn winner breaking my embarrassing 4 game losing skid.
