The NCAA tournament is a time to celebrate college sports…wagering. Opening weekend is a two day unofficial holiday where work productivity bottoms out with employees from coast to coast streaming games, checking scores, and monitoring their bracket standings as each game goes final. For a select few, making a pilgrimage to the gambling epicenter is a rite of passage that needs to be on everyone’s bucket list. Here are 5 things to make you look like a betting professional even if it happens to be your maiden voyage when heading to the sportsbook. Know your betting index number Bettors accustomed to playing online or with a local bookie may not know what this terminology means. The betting index number is a three (or four digit) code attached to each team on the big board. Each three betting index number remains the same no matter if you’re looking to place your bets at a MGM, Cantor Technology, or a William Hill sportsbook. Halftime numbers can vary depending on the establishment but they’ll almost always be listed as a four digit number making it easy to tell the difference between full game prices. These individual codes are what you’ll see to the left of every team on LED boards and sportsbook sheets and become the only pieces of relevant information you need when walking to the window. Knowing the team name doesn’t help a ticket writer; it’s these identifying codes that insure the accuracy of your ticket on every wager. Don’t be that guy looking at the board trying to find these numbers when your at the teller window. Check your ticket If I had a dollar every time some drunk idiot came up to me after a game was over while I worked behind the...

…and then there were 16 teams left dancing into the 2nd weekend of the big dance. Already we’re seeing some interesting betting trends beginning to emerge for the Sweet 16 highlighted by 2 huge public favorites both going in the late time slot Friday Night (Michigan St & Duke). Don’t believe me? Here’s early thoughts from Kevin Bradley of Bovada on the Duke game “Not much has changed after the first weekend of the Madness with Kentucky leading the way at even money to win it all and haveingtaken four times more money than the next team. Duke seems to be the trendy pick right now behind the play of Jahlil Okafor who we have dropped from 14/1 to 10/1 to win tournament MOP. Looking at the Sweet 16 games there is that common trend with Duke taking over 90% of the action right now -5 over Utah and I expect that to be our biggest decision of the round.” -Kevin Bradley, Sports Book Manager, bovada.lv Bradley highlights what most of us in the industry have always known to be true come March; it’s not what you’ve done all season but rather what you’ve done lately that steer public betting trends. Along with the customary betting markets Bovada has a handful of other props available to the casual bettor looking to get a quick fix. Odds to win Tournament MOP Willie Cauley-Stein (Kentucky) 4/1 Karl-Anthony Towns (Kentucky) 7/1 Trey Lyles (Kentucky) 15/2 Aaron Harrison (Kentucky) 10/1 Jahlil Okafor (Duke) 10/1 Andrew Harrison (Kentucky) 12/1 Frank Kaminsky (Wisconsin) 12/1 Brandon Ashley (Arizona) 16/1 Stanley Johnson (Arizona) 16/1 T.J. Given the circus that took place at Hilton from a betting perspective we can’t really fault him for going the extra mile not once, not twice, but 3 times with references to the pointspread in the final minute. Fran Fraschila even got into the act which took this epic minute of television to the next level. Special thanks to Rob Perez (follow him on twitter @World_Wide_Wob) for putting these vines...
5-20-5 Rule

Seeking value is what we’re always after as sports bettors. There’s a reason the professionals don’t care about the names on the front or back of jerseys and look to bet purely on what their numbers tell them. Isolating the right time to bet on, pass, or bet against certain teams is critical to long term success because oddsmakers can’t always quantify situational analysis in a betting number. I was taught a college basketball betting rule when I first started in this business and really believe it will always withstand the test of time. 5-20-5 Assuming a 30 game sample size for an average college basketball team; teams will play 5 games above their head (bet on), hold true to their actual power rating for 20 (pass those games), and below their capabilities for 5 (bet against). If you recognize these scheduling quirks when they present themselves throughout the season you give yourself a great opportunity to optimize value and gain an edge on the bookmaker’s numbers that may not incorporate valuable handicapping intangibles. There may only be a few short weeks left in the college basketball season but with so many teams vying for conference titles, conf tourney byes, and bolstered resumes for the committee use every angle possible to identify that hidden edge....

We haven’t seen a team as dominant as Kentucky in mens basketball in quite some time. Big Blue’s depth is reflected in futures odds posted by the Westgate Superbook given UK is just better than an even money proposition to cut down the nets. With one team leaps and bounds above the rest of the field, value is otherwise created on a bevy of other talented teams. The sides in bold are schools I think could be worth an investment…just hope they avoid Kentucky’s bracket when the field is announced a few months from now. 2014-15 MENS NCAA BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT LUCAS OIL STADIUM — INDIANAPOLIS, IN MONDAY, APRIL 6, 2015 ARIZONA 7 DUKE 7 FLORIDA 30 KANSAS 30 KENTUCKY 6-5 WISCONSIN 8 NORTH CAROLINA 30 WICHITA ST 30 VILLANOVA 25 LOUISVILLE 18 SMU 100 VIRGINIA 18 IOWA ST 40 MICHIGAN 60 MICHIGAN ST 60 SYRACUSE 75 VCU 100 GONZAGA 15 OHIO ST 75 OKLAHOMA 60 SAN DIEGO ST 60 TEXAS 40 UCLA 100 IOWA 200 NEBRASKA 200 OREGON 300 BAYLOR 300 U CONN 75 ARIZONA ST 300 ARKANSAS 75 CINCINNATI 300 COLORADO 300 DAYTON 300 FLORIDA ST 500 GEORGETOWN 200 GEORGIA 500 INDIANA 500 KANSAS ST 500 LSU 500 MARQUETTE 1000 MARYLAND 300 MEMPHIS 500 MIAMI FL 75 MINNESOTA 500 MISSOURI 1000 OKLAHOMA ST 300 OLE MISS 300 PITTSBURGH 200 PROVIDENCE 300 SETON HALL 300 ST LOUIS 2000 STANFORD 300 TENNESSEE 500 UNLV 500 UTAH 60 UTEP 1000 ALABAMA 500 GEORGIA TECH 500 ILLINOIS 100 NEW MEXICO 1000 NOTRE DAME 200 SOUTH CAROLINA 500 ST JOE’S 2000 ST JOHN’S 200 U MASS 300 USC 1000 VANDERBILT 500 WEST VIRGINIA 200 XAVIER 300 BYU 300 CALIFORNIA 300 CLEMSON 1000 COLORADO ST 500 CREIGHTON 500 DEPAUL 2000 GEORGE WASHINGTON 300 HARVARD 300 LASALLE 1000 LOUISIANA TECH...
