If not, is there value on the Raptors and Wizards, or are the Celtics for real? With Golden State 100% healthy are they going to blow through the Western Conference, or can Westbrook and Harden pull off an upset and show why they’re truly deserving of the MVP award? As always, Dave Mason joins to give us a glimpse behind the counter sharing where the pro and joe money is. He also talks future liability with one specific team, but doesn’t sound like Mason’s all too worried. Golden State is the talk of the town after steam rolling the Lakers last night to make history. The Warriors are the first team in NBA history to start the season 16-0 and with that major milestone in the books, everyone’s attention shifts to the other side of the coin. There are fans and there are sports bettors…of course there are also those that consider themselves both. Rob Perez would fall into that class with his loyalty and allegiance to the Knicks well documented through social media. I don’t do a NBA mock draft, hell I’m nowhere close to a NBA expert with an opinion worth a damn but when Rob invited me on his podcast the night before the draft to talk him off the Porzingis ledge, I reluctantly...
NBA Title ’16

There’s a good chance we’ll crown the 2015 NBA champion tonight…or later this week but either way we’re splitting hairs here. For most fans and teams their focus is already on the 2015-16 season. Look what we have here; odds on who will hold the Larry OBrien trophy at this time next year. Courtesy of the Westgate Superbook here’s your complete list of odds to win next year’s title. Notice that Cleveland is an overwhelming favorite to come out of the East at 5-9 while the Oklahoma City Thunder, even with a first time head coach Billy Donovan, are listed as 2nd favorites tied with the Warriors behind only the Cavaliers in the eyes of oddsmakers. 2015-2016 NBA CHAMPIONSHIP CAVALIERS 9-4WARRIORS 5THUNDER 5CLIPPERS 10SPURS 12BULLS 12HAWKS 20PELICANS 20ROCKETS 20WIZARDS 30PACERS 30GRIZZLIES 30RAPTORS 30BLAZERS 40MAVERICKS 40HEAT 30CELTICS 80BUCKS 80PISTONS 80JAZZ 80SUNS 80LAKERS 80NUGGETS 80KNICKS 80NETS 100KINGS 10076ERS 200MAGIC 200WOLVES 200HORNETS 2002015-2016 EASTERN CONFERENCE CAVALIERS 5-9BULLS 11-2HAWKS 9WIZARDS 14PACERS 14RAPTORS 14HEAT 14CELTICS 35BUCKS 35PISTONS 35KNICKS 35NETS 4576ERS 80MAGIC 80HORNETS 802015-2016 WESTERN CONFERENCE WARRIORS 5-2THUNDER 5-2CLIPPERS 5SPURS 6PELICANS 10ROCKETS 10GRIZZLIES 15BLAZERS 20MAVERICKS 20 JAZZ 40SUNS 40LAKERS 40NUGGETS 40KINGS 50WOLVES...
Vegas Perspective

The NBA finals tip off tonight and the competition won’t be reserved for just the players on the court. Bettors around the world have been plunking down their gambling dollars on both sides of the series wager creating a huge divide between the Pros and the Joes. Depending on where you look the series price has ranged from as high as Golden State -275 / Cleveland +235 at Westgate Superbook compared to a line that dipped as low as Golden State -190 / Cleveland +165 at the MGM Mirage properties late Wednesday night. The difference of opinion between the professionals and the public isn’t new but sportsbooks hanging such a wide range of prices reflects how differently everyone sees the potential outcome. “So far our action has been Cavs, Cavs and more Cavs…….seeing money on the Cavs in game 1, on the ML in game 1, and to win the best of 7 series,” Chuck Esposito, Race and Sports Director at Sunset Station, told me about the betting pattern he’s seen emerge at his properties. Stations is a large casino corporation here in Nevada known for catering to more of a recreational betting clientele at their various statewide locations. Stations wasn’t alone when it came to the flood of Cavaliers money early and often regarding series wagering. In a press release issued by Michael Grodsky of William Hill late last Friday, Grodsky indicated a similar trend taking place at his properties from the moment William Hill posted a series price. Since NBA Finals Series wagering opened on early Thursday morning (May 28th), bettors have been continuously flooding the windows with Cleveland Cavalier wagers. The Cavaliers opened as a +210 underdog to defeat the Golden State Warriors in the NBA Finals. The Cavaliers’ Series Money...
Liability Report

The NBA is one game away from their potential star studded dream scenario. Assuming Golden State avoids the first ever 3-0 series collapse in league history, the Warriors will open as considerable favorites against the Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA finals. For a few sportsbook operators, Golden State raising the Larry O’Brien trophy would be anything but an ideal result for their future book. William Hill opened the Warriors at 15-1 back in June of last year while the Cavs were listed at 50-1 BEFORE Lebron James elected to take his talents back home to Cleveland. Most books, including William Hill, were able to stay comfortably ahead of the Cavs crush of future money that flooded the market once LBJ finalized his plans. However, they were not so fortunate to stay ahead of the upstart Warriors swell of support amid their hot start and surprising season. Entering the conference finals Golden St represented 39% of the remaining future tickets at Will Hill equating to 66% of overall money wagered. The Cavaliers accounted for 27% of future tickets but a much more manageable 18% of money being wagered. Westgate Superbook also finds themselves in a situation where a Golden St championship creates a losing scenario for their NBA futures pool. Back on June 9 Golden State opened at 20-1 while Cleveland was listed at 60-1 to win the title. In a brief conversation with Jeff Sherman last evening he said that while a Warrior victory would indeed be a small loser for his book the current position wasn’t substantial enough to impact the way they plan to book the finals. For casual bettors unfamiliar with what this industry jargon means, sportsbooks always have the option of shading series prices accordingly to steer action. This...

Legalized Wagering
posted by Todd
The topic of legalized sports wagering, especially in relation to its impact on the NBA, has been a hot button topic since Adam Silver’s ground breaking comments months ago. On New Year’s Eve, a columnist named Jay Evensen had some pretty scathing comments about potential ramifications of Silver’s position on the topic in regards to fan experience. Here’s an excerpt from his article: …Which leads me to a New Year’s warning as I peer through my crystal ball into 2015. Appropriately, it is sports related, and it goes like this: If the NBA succeeds in making it legal to wager money on its games, it would be a bad thing for the league, the sport and, to some extent, Utah’s economy… Click here to read the full article Todd’s Take First things first: I know nothing about the current state of Utah’s economy. However, I do understand in this progressive era of local casinos and lottery development Utah remains staunchly opposed to games of chance. The Legislature shall not authorize any game of chance, lottery or gift enterprise under any pretense or for any purpose. Now this is well and good because I personally hate state lotteries as well. Each state should govern its people accordingly but I believe Jay is missing the point here. Evensen uses the 1919 Black Sox scandal back in 1999 along with the 2007 NBA scandal involving Tim Donaghy to make his point about integrity of sport. To his credit he doesn’t appear to be of the opinion that the act of gambling itself would change the propensity for games to be rigged but rather he cites the fan experience as being vastly different with legalized wagering. Wait what? To claim the fan experience would drastically change with widespread...
