2013 PGA Championship: Glory’s Last Shot Though Phil Mickelson claimed the British Open just 17 days ago, another major is quickly upon us as Oak Hill plays host to the 95th PGA Championship starting Thursday. While it’s often seen as the fourth major in terms of importance or personality, the PGA arguably boasts the year’s best field and has provided no shortage of drama over the past few years. Written by @Fullmarx12 Click here for the complete list of odds Key Factors Though it serves as one of golf’s more venerable layouts, Oak Hill has not been encountered by many of the players in this week’s field prior to this week. It last hosted the PGA Championship in 2003, when longshot Shaun Micheel held on for what remains his lone PGA Tour victory (Oakhill also hosted the U.S. Amateur in 1998). Here are two keys to the Donald Ross layout: Total Driving: This PGA Tour stat combines both driving distance and driving accuracy, both of which will be imperative this week in Rochester. At 7,163 yards, this par-70 course has more than a handful of lengthy holes, notably the 17th and 18th holes, a pair of par-4s that measure 509 yards and 497 yards respectively. So while distance off the tee will be needed to contend, accuracy will be even more important. According to player and media reports, the rough this week is some of the toughest encountered all year, outside of perhaps the U.S. Open. Missed fairways could result in wedges back to the short stuff and accurate driving will be rewarded. Scrambling: While the rough along Oak Hill’s fairways will be penal, the thick stuff around the greens is just brutal. Players will need to control their distances into the greens, as...

Tiger Tour: 2013 Masters Preview...

Written by Fullmarx (be sure to follow him on twitter) 2013 Masters Preview: Tiger Takes on the World Spring is in the air. The azaleas are in bloom. Jim Nantz is once again reminding you that his job is way, way better than yours. It’s time for golf’s first major of the year: The Masters. Key Factors There are 93 players in this week’s field, with about 40-45 guys possessing a realistic chance at winning. In choosing among the contenders, here are three factors that I think will play an especially pivotal role: Greens in Regulation: Recent history indicates that if you want to win at Augusta, you have to hit greens in regulation early and often. Of the last 14 winners, 10 of them have finished T-4 of better for the week in GIR percentage. With rain potentially in the forecast for Thursday and Friday that is more likely to soften the course than suspend play, conditions should be ripe for scoring and players will need as many birdie opportunities as possible. Those that spend the least amount of their week trying to scramble for pars will have the best shot. Par 5 Performance: Fans and players alike know that the place where Augusta is most vulnerable is on the par 5s and those hoping to win must take advantage. Six of the last seven winners have played the par 5s in 8 under or better for the week, essentially meaning players looking to contend will need to birdie every other par-5 throughout the week. Three-Putt Avoidance: Around Augusta, the ability to two-putt from 60 feet across a giant tier is just as important as being able to fire an approach shot close the pin. Players will face at least a handful of...
Ryder Cup Preview

Written by Fullmarx12 Capping the Cup This week, the attention of the golf world descends upon Medinah Country Club outside Chicago for the Ryder Cup. Contested every two years, the Ryder Cup is the most iconic team event in what is otherwise a wholly individual sport. Although the U.S. dominated the event’s early years, Team Europe has now won four of the last five Cups and enter as the defending champions, having won the 2010 matches in Wales by a single point. Here are some keys to keep in mind as you look to place your golf bets this weekend: Format Before heading to the window, it’s important to understand how this particular event is set up. Two teams of 12 golfers will go toe to toe this week at Medinah across three days; 28 matches will be contested, with one point for a win and a half point for a draw. The first team to 14.5 points wins the Cup; in the event of a 14-14 tie, Europe keeps the trophy as defending champions. Friday and Saturday will include both a morning and afternoon session in which two players from each team pair up across four matches; this means that for each session during the first two days, both teams will have 4 of their 12 players sitting on the sidelines. Only on Sunday, during the singles matches, will all 12 players from each team tee off during the same session. Both morning sessions will feature Foursome matches, commonly known as alternate shot. As the name implies, in these matches teammates play a single ball on each hole and simply alternate who hits each shot until the hole is completed. With less margin for error, this format tends to favor the more consistent...
PGA Championship

Written by the Golf Guru (follow him on twitter @fullmarx12) This week, the strongest field in golf will converge along the beaches of South Carolina to contest the PGA Championship, the year’s fourth and final major. The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island will serve as host, a small strip of land near Charleston once nearly decimated by Hurricane Hugo in 1989, re-built for its debut during the 1991 Ryder Cup that became known as the “War on the Shore,” and today dubbed by Golf Digest as “America’s Toughest Golf Course.” Course Overview The Ocean Course will provide a stern test for the players this week as bogeys and the dreaded “other” will abound. The PGA of America will be able to lengthen the course out past 7,600 yards but on a track with 10 holes running alongside the Atlantic Ocean, the number one defense will always be the wind. Although the forecasts this week call for calm-to-moderate conditions, players will have to factor in the wind on every shot. The geography of the course is such that there is no prevailing wind direction; a hole can switch from downwind to into-the-wind from one day to the next, or even within a matter of hours. As is often the case with majors, this will favor solid ballstrikers – those with a low, consistent ball flight – as well as players who can comfortably shape their shots in both directions. Players who are overly reliant on a single shot shape will struggle on cross-wind holes and those with a higher ball flight will too often see their shots at the mercy of the elements. Additionally, in a ruling that may take some getting used to for both players and viewers, the PGA has instituted a “no...
Olympic Proportions
posted by Todd
Written by @Fullmarx12 The golf world focuses its attention on San Francisco this week where the U.S. Open will be contested at the Olympic Club. This course has both variety and character – few if any courses will feature both a sub-300 yard par-4 (the 7th hole comes in at 288 yards) and a plus-600 yard par-5 (the 16th will be stretched this week to 670 yards, the longest hole in major championship history). With no water hazards and only a single fairway bunker, Olympic’s difficulty lies in its small targets, uneven fairways, and heavily-guarded greens. The USGA, somewhat embarrassed by Rory McIlroy’s rout of Congressional last year, will look to return the event to what we all have come to know and love: a limited number of birdies, an emphasis on par and an abundance of frustration. Make the first shot count Marked by narrow fairways and tiny greens, Olympic will reward the more accurate players in the field both off the tee and into the green. The last time the U.S. Open was held here in 1998, Lee Janzen was T-3 for the week in fairways hit and led the field in greens in regulation en route to victory. With its trademark reverse camber fairways, accuracy off the tee is especially important. On six different occasions, the design of the hole goes one way (i.e. right-to-left) while the slope of the fairway runs in the opposite direction (i.e. left-to-right). This phenomenon – which can appear to defy physics from the tee box – means that even a slight error will result in a missed fairway. As a result, I will look to back players who are not only accurate off the tee but can also shape the ball both ways since tee...
