US Open

The 115th US Open starts tomorrow from Chambers Bay out in the Pacific Northwest. Golf will have a new broadcast partner for this event as Fox and Fox Sports 1 (along with Fox Sports Go) will carry around the clock coverage of our golf national championship. Naturally if an event is going to be on TV you’re going to look for a little action to keep things interesting. By all accounts the course will provide some different challenges from previous US Open’s. It won’t be narrow tree lined fairways or insanely thick rough that players need to avoid but rather navigate a course that will be burned up playing hard and fast. I won’t claim to be a golf expert, shit I can’t break 100 even with mulligans, however it doesn’t stop me from listening to trusted voices that believe mental toughness will play as big a role this weekend as just the physical game. Pin placement on the large undulating greens will mean every precision tee shot and approach landed incorrectly can sink a contender’s chances playing more like a British Open course than we’ve seen in the past. For a more technical breakdown read this preview from friend of the program and golf channel writer Will Gray A quick glance at the oddsmakers leader board reveals a tandem of familiar names listed in single digits; Rory McIlroy (7-1) and Jordan Spieth (8-1). One household name accustomed to that distinction years ago, Tiger Woods, checks in much further down the big board at 50-1 headed into the tournament…a far cry from where he opened at 15. Below you’ll find the current prices compared to openers courtesy of the Westgate Superbook. ***For those new to golf wagering don’t think the only way to turn...

Thursday marks the start of a great annual sports tradition, the Masters. I’ll admit I’m not much of a golf bettor in the least but that doesn’t stop us from sharing some of the most recent odds on the tournament currently available at the Westgate Superbook. Like some of the other major sporting events that capture our wagering dollar tread lightly if betting golf isn’t in your wheelhouse. 2015 Futures

We just crowned our final major champion of 2014 but that doesn’t stop oddsmakers from looking towards next year. The Masters is a major betting event on the golf calendar, largely because the futures prices will sit on the betting board from now until Mid-April. A quick glance at the opening numbers don’t indicate major surprises with Rory “don’t call me Tiger” McIlroy leading the charge. However it’s his 5-1 price that’s eye popping compared to the 10-1 he went off at before this year’s event. Little to say the recent run of dominance from the ultra talented 25 year old has his weekly odds approaching prices like we grew accustomed to with Tiger in his prime (I said approaching, far from the same). Numbers never lie and these futures tell a definite story about his recent surge THE MASTERS AUGUSTA NATIONAL GOLF CLUB – AUGUSTA, GEORGIA APRIL 9–12, 2015 (odds courtesy of the LVH Superbook) ODDS TO WIN: RORY McILROY 5/1 TIGER WOODS 12/1 ADAM SCOTT 15/1 PHIL MICKELSON 15/1 BUBBA WATSON 20/1 JASON DAY 20/1 RICKIE FOWLER 20/1 JORDAN SPIETH 20/1 JUSTIN ROSE 25/1 MATT KUCHAR 25/1 SERGIO GARCIA 30/1 HENRIK STENSON 30/1 DUSTIN JOHNSON 30/1 LEE WESTWOOD 30/1 CHARL SCHWARTZEL 40/1 BRANDT SNEDEKER 40/1 MARTIN KAYMER 50/1 ZACH JOHNSON 50/1 JASON DUFNER 50/1 JIM FURYK 50/1 KEEGAN BRADLEY 50/1 HUNTER MAHAN 50/1 JIMMY WALKER 50/1 GRAEME McDOWELL 60/1 IAN POULTER 60/1 LOUIS OOSTHUIZEN 60/1 ANGEL CABRERA 60/1 LUKE DONALD 80/1 PATRICK REED 80/1 HIDEKI MATSUYAMA 80/1 VICTOR DUBUISSON 80/1 MARC LEISHMAN 80/1 RYAN MOORE 80/1 GRAHAM DeLAET 80/1 HARRIS ENGLISH 80/1 GARY WOODLAND 80/1 JONAS BLIXT 80/1 STEVE STRICKER 100/1 WEBB SIMPSON 100/1 BILL HAAS 100/1 NICK WATNEY 100/1 JAMIE DONALDSON 100/1 MIGUEL ANGEL JIMENEZ 100/1 FRANCESCO MOLINARI 125/1 CHRIS KIRK 125/1 BRENDON TODD 125/1 JOHN SENDEN 125/1 THOMAS BJORN 125/1 BROOKS...

The Tiger Effect
posted by Todd
Golf is better with Tiger Woods. Hard core golf fans may not agree with the impact of the polarizing superstar but the numbers simply don’t lie. Earlier this morning I took a few minutes to pick the brain of seasoned golf oddsmaker Jeff Sherman (if you’re not already following, encourage you to do so now) about how important Tiger’s involvement in the majors is to the health of his betting markets. Historically the British Open doesn’t attract nearly the same betting attention as the US Open but given Tiger’s return this weekend, Sherman said that wasn’t the case. He went on to tell me what most of us probably speculated: Tiger has been the most heavily bet golfer of any in the field for this weekend’s tournament at Royal Liverpool Golf Club. Sherman moved him as high as 25-1 to win the tournament before taking 2 large bets that forced the price back down to 15-1. While 15-1 doesn’t sound like a large number it becomes a bigger deal when compared to the travesty that is 3-1 currently offered by one Las Vegas based casino. At 25-1 that was actually the highest price available on Tiger to win a major that Sherman had used in a long long time. Of course Tiger winning this weekend wouldn’t be good for the house when it comes to liability but at the same time numbers don’t lie…Tiger just being involved not only helps the tv ratings but also drives healthier betting handle.
