Moose is loose: Bad beats of the week (Dec 19-25)

Monday, December 19
Closing line: Southern Miss -1.5  vs Arizona State
Final : Southern Miss 64-61

ASU is quickly becoming the king of 2nd half meltdowns, the college hoops equivalent of Texas A&M football.  Leading 30-21 at the break, Sun Devil bettors felt pretty comfortable with their home underdog.  However fates quickly turned as USM erased the halftime deficit by the 12:14 mark of the second half tying the game at 34.  With 4:50 to go it was actually the Golden Eagles who built a 54-43 lead and seemed poised to run and hide themselves however ASU fought all the way back knotting the score at 61 with only 5 seconds left.  Southern Miss Forward Darrell Dodson (UK transfer) would have none of that talk though as he dashed the SunDevil’s cover draining a three at the buzzer squashing ASU’s improbable comeback.  The irony? Dodson wasn’t even supposed to play for USM and became the X-factor.

Closing line: NC State +1 vs St Bonaventure
Final: Nc State 67-65

The game was back and forth the entire 40 minutes with neither team able to extend and take firm control. Tied at 65 with 3 seconds left, NC State’s CJ Leslie caught a full court baseball pass and in his own unique variation of the Christian Laettner play turned and hit a game winning jumper with .08 seconds left for a Wolfpack win.  Upon further review Leslie actually stepped out of bounds which would have negated the game winner and sent the game to OT. Officials didn’t review the play and Mark Gottfried’s team became the beneficiary of a fortuitous missed call.  Don’t believe me, here’s video evidence to prove it.

Tuesday, December 20
Closing line: Utah St -5.5 vs UT-Arlington
Final: Utah St 73-69

With 3:32 Left in the game Utah State had a commanding 70-52 lead.  Bettors figured sure, an 18 pt lead with 3 minutes and change left has to be money in the bank only laying 5 right? Over the next 3 + minutes Arlington went on a 17-3 run to close the game saving the greatest heartbreak of all for the closing seconds. With 8 ticks left, Utah St’s Preston Medlin hit two free throws to give Utah St a 73-66 lead extending outside the number where the Aggies spent most of the 2nd half. Arlington took the ball down the court clanging a 3 off the iron but snagged the offensive rebound and kicked it out to Cameron Catlett for a Hail Mary 3 at the bell;  nothing but net and a UT Arlington Miracle cover that must have felt like a moose stampede for Aggie bettors.

Closing line: Syracuse -19.5
Final: Syracuse 80-61

Up 25 with 54 seconds left you’d figure Cuse -19.5 was as good as gold with under a minute left.  Tulane’s Jordan Callahan had other ideas deciding to end the game with a flourish from deep.  Callahan hit his first 3 with 44 seconds left which cut the Cuse lead to 22.  After a missed jumper, offensive rebound, and subsequent miss by the Orange, Callahan nailed his second shot from distance with 5 seconds left giving the Green Wave a cover they definitely didn’t deserve.

Closing line: Green Bay -14, 2nd half Green Bay -5.5
Final: Green Bay 35-21, 2nd half Green Bay 21-18

Down 17 and facing a 4th and 6 at the Green Bay 12 yard line Chicago did what almost every underdog player has screamed for countless times: KICK THE MEANINGLESS FG!   Kick the Field Goal is exactly what Chicago did trimming the Packer lead to a more manageable 14 pt deficit (insert sarcasm).  Depending on what line you played for the game (Closed at 14) this could have pushed the full game bet.  If you had the Bears +5.5 2nd half you were thanking Lovie Smith and Robbie Gould for not going for it and giving you a Christmas miracle.
