#BoxscoreReview Week 2 College Football

Each week we’ll cover all the games that are a;ready in the books, trying to highlight any unusual ocurrences or statistical anomalies to get you prepared for the upcoming slate of games. As always, use hashtag #BoxscoreReview if anything jumps out to you from the weekend in real time and we’ll include it in our post.

Air Force at Michigan: AFA out first downed Michigan 26-19 and matched them yard for yard.  The propellerheads ran 34 more plays, converted 12-21 3rd downs, and held the ball 11 minutes longer than Michigan leading to an easy cover as +21.5 pt dogs.

UGA at Missouri: The key to the Bulldogs success? They were able to get off the field on 3rd down holding Missouri to 4 of 18.

Miami at Kansas St: Kansas St punted one time en route to their 52-13 drubbing of the Canes.  KSU outgained Miami 498-262 and even that wasn’t a good indicator of how lopsided the game really was in Manhattan.

Syracuse vs USC: The final score doesn’t do the Orange justice.  Syracause had 27 FD’s compared to 17 for USC and yardage was identical.  The major difference? USC outgained the Orange nearly 2:1 on the ground avg 7.8 YPC.

Wisconsin at Oregon: The mighty Badgers mustered 207 yards of offense in Corvallis.  Heisman hopeful Montee Ball continues to struggle only gaining 61 yards on 15 carries.

Fresno St at Oregon: Ducks took their foot off the gas in the 2nd half. For the 2nd time in as many weeks, Oregon only scored 7 pts over the final 30 minutes.  So far this year they’re outscoring opponents 85-16 in the 1st half but have been outscored 43-14 after the break.

UTEP at Ole Miss: The Rebels used a ground and pound game to keep the Miners at arm’s length all night.  Ole Miss ran for 332 yards, an avg of 7.8 ypc while holding UTEP to an avg of 1.2 ypc

Auburn at Mississippi St: Grounded Tiger is putting it mildly. The Bulldogs stymied Auburn, limiting them to 216 yards of offense. The only TD for AU came via a 100 yd kickoff return which obviously spells trouble against elite SEC west defenses.

Texas Tech at Texas St: One week after upsetting Houston, reality hit hard for the Bobcats. Transitional D-1 member TSU was crushed on the scoreboard and stat sheet (32-16 FD’s, 591-270 yards).

Maryland at Temple: When you’re a 10 pt favorite, amassing 9 first downs is pretty pathetic. The Owls gained 230 yards and yielded 36 pts to Maryland. Even worse when you consider the Terps scored 7 pts the week before vs William and Mary.

Louisiana Tech at Houston: There was no fluke in the 56-49 shootout Saturday night. Tech and UG combined for 78 first downs with nearly 1300 yards of offense. The most impressive stat however was how then two teams still found time to punt 11 times and commit 26 penalties between.

Nebraska at UCLA: Where have the blackshirts gone? Nebraska gave up 653 yards to UCLA including 344 on the ground, stats absolutely unheard of during the Bo Pellini era in Lincoln.

Tulane at Tulsa: Rush to win was the Golden Hurricane mantra as they compiled 364 yards on the ground to the Green Wave’s 7.

Duke at Stanford: Duke may have lost 50-13 on the Farm but somehow they outgained the Cardinal 385-373 and matched them 18-18 in first downs.

UL Lafayette at Troy: The Cajuns won the game 37-24 but they definitely lost the stat sheet.  Corey Robinson threw 70 passes for the Trojans compiling 485 yards. Troy outgained ULL 588-389 and ran 40 more plays in the 13 pt loss.

Memphis at Arkansas St: A review of this boxscore and I’m personally confused how the Red Wolves only won 33-28. ASU won the battle of first downs 33-13, outgained Memphis 619-293, and ran 41 more plays. The Tigers were able to stay in the game with 2 non-offensive TD’s despite their offensive ineptitude.

ULM at Arkansas: There was nothing fluky about ULM’s upset win over Arkansas when you review the box.  They ran more plays, gained more yards, and completed 25 more passes. Pig Souie? Not last Saturday…

FBS vs FCS

UNH at Minnesota: Gophers only had 19 first downs despite scoring 44 pts vs the Wildcats.  Minny had 3 TD drives of 3 plays or less (1,1,3), hardly the norm for a team who lacks a wealth of big play talent

Austin Peay at Virginia Tech: A normally stout VT run defense allowed the Governors to run for 159 yards (3.9 ypc).

North Dakota St at Colorado St: NDSU’s win over FBS member Colorado St was no fluke. The Bison outgained, out rushed, doubled first downs, and doubled time of possesion en route to their 22-7 victory. NDSU was 12-21 on 3rd downs while the Rams were an abysmal 1-10. This just in, Colorado St and Colorado may have very long years in 2012.

Sacramenton St at Colorado: The Hornets racked up 28 first down’s to CU’s 20, outgained CU 466-341 (passing yards were 312-188), and more importantly won outright 30-28 as 22.5 pt underdogs.

Eastern Washington at Washington St: Wazzou starter Jeff Tuel left the game with injury and the Cougars offense stagnated.  EWU outgained their Pac 12 neighbors 469-355 and actually should have won the game outright but a last second pass attempt fell to the turf.

Western Carolina at Marshall: The Herd racked up 37 first downs and 615 yards of offense. Marshall showed great balance with 185 yards on the ground bolstered by 430 yards passing.

Texas Southern vs North Texas: Accuracy could be a problem in the passing game all year since the Mean Green were 11-24 against the defensive juggernaut known as Texas Southern

Stephen F Austin vs SMU: 52-0 looks like a dominating effort right? SMU was actually out first downed 28-17, outgained 466-328, and scored 4 non-offensive touchdowns.

Grambling vs TCU: Horned Frogs QB’s combined to go 17-17. The TCU defense wasn’t too shabby either, holding Grambling to 70 yards of total offense.
