Market Watch: College hoops

Investment principles applied by savvy stock brokers mirror the same strategies employed by the sharpest sports bettors to insure long term success.  Every week bettors have opportunities to “buy” undervalued teams and “sell” those that are grossly overpriced.  Bruce Friedman provides his weekly take in market watch

BUYS

Kentucky

(12-31 vs Louisville) a quick glance at UK’s recent schedule reveals a team that hasn’t covered a game in over a month and now plays host to a huge in state rival in Louisville; that same Cardinal side that was exposed against Georgetown on Wednesday.  Bettors looking to invest in UK at home always end up paying a premium (see UNC game) however this is a game they’ve had circled in Lexington and I expect max focus and effort in what amounts to a great spot backing the normally over valued and wallet breaking Wildcats.

Duke

(12-30 vs Pennsylvania, 1-4 @Temple): The last time Duke faced off against Penn it resulted in a 59 point victory.  Yes thats correct, 59 points.  I don’t expect anything near 59 points but this is a game where the Devils can name the number based on talent alone.  Meanwhile the next game following a projected drubbing of Penn is against another Philly 5 school in Temple that’s actually playing good ball. For my money I don’t see the Owls able to match-up with Duke’s shooters and this should be an easy week for Duke heading into conference play.

Marquette

(1-1 Villanova, 1-4 @Georgetown): Another team that’s been a covering nightmare (0-5-1 L6) and now jumps into the meat of their Big East schedule following a pathetic effort against Vandy where they were never competitive.  The Golden Eagles catch a scuffling Nova side at home who they should beat convincingly while they look to gain confidence going into a tough game against the Hoyas.   Expect Georgetown to be overvalued themselves entering off two tough games of their own including an upset win over Louisville and a likely W against Providence.
BUYER BEWARE: If Georgetown loses to Providence the value I expect to find in Marquette definitely won’t be reflected in the number.

Blue Chip Buy:

Towson (1-2 Northeastern, 1-4 @Drexel): Surprised?  Stunned?  Good.  Seriously where can this stock go but up? Northeastern has been struggling their past handful of games and granted they’ve faced better competition, they aren’t built to be installed as a favorite. Assuming Towson struggles mightily tonight as 31 pt dogs against UVA there should be value in the Tigers moving forward but it wont be for the faint of heart.

SELLS

St. John’s
(12-31 @UConn, 1-3 Louisville): The Storm’s 3 game winning streak has consisted of beating two scrubs and a drubbing of an overrated Providence side.  Things heat up in a hurry for St John’s when they travel to UConn to take on a vastly superior Husky side before returning home to take on Louisville.  I’m not buying an undermanned Storm team in either of these games since they’re a side I believe to be a sell throughout most of conference play

Syracuse
(1-1 @DePaul, 1-4 @Providence): Yes I know what you’re thinking how can I sell the “best” team in the nation especially against two teams who aren’t ranked in the Top 25?  Well for one, they’re two road games against conference foes with a home date against Marquette looming in the near future.  Fresh off a demolition of Seton Hall,  look for two “close” games where the Cuse will win but struggle to cover inflated price tags against inferior competition.

Stock has peaked sell now!

Murray State (12-30 @Eastern Illinois, 1-4 Eastern Kentucky):  Stunned again?  Good, thats how you’re supposed to feel when you short sell an undefeated team.  Murray State has become an ATM when you’re talking ATS and the stock has reached its peak.  Lines will be inflated for these two games that look like gimmes on paper along with the rest of their OVC schedule.  Look for Murray to get all they bargained for and more when it comes to covering as DD chalk on a nightly basis.
